The sky above Huntington State Beach on Wednesday morning, April 19, was filled with homemade kites made out of clear plastic, colored with markers and sporting tails made of caution tape.

More than 140 students from Sage Hill, a private high school in Newport Beach, guided their buddies, 165 Santa Ana third-graders from El Sol Science and Arts Academy and Edward B Cole Sr. Academy to fly their ragtag creations.

The event, part of Sage Hill’s freshman service learning project aims to help students with science, math and technology subjects. The students have met once a month since September to put their knowledge to the test with projects such as building towers made out of uncoooked spaghetti and launching air-powered rockets.
