El Sol Magazine

El Sol Magazine – The El Sol Magazine is a variety magazine that captures the range of students’ interests.  Our magazine includes different topics, but generally consists of news, special features, and seasonal features. Students use the magazine to write reports, exploratory articles, and explanatory articles.  Thus, they cover topics from reporting on school events, to figuring out why we get hiccups, or suggesting the best ways to save energy at home. In the process of composing the magazine, students take on inquiry-based projects, gain rhetorical awareness, learn about design, and strengthen their digital literacy. Students also have opportunities to create zines (mini magazines) and their own personal magazines that they create in groups, based on their specific interests.

poetryXchange

poetryXchange offers creative writing workshops for El Sol students and teachers. Modeled after university seminars, poetry workshops at El Sol expose students to a wide range of poetic voices and creative teaching practices to carefully guide the inspiration, drafting, writing and revision of their own original poetry. Students from UCI assist poet and founding director, Sue Cronmiller in the classroom while completing field work in education and social sciences research. Student work created in these vibrant workshops is collected for publication in student poetry anthologies. This program represents a partnership between El Sol, UCI and UC Links at UC Berkeley. poetryXchange was twice awarded grants from Cal Humanities.  Program Director Sue Cronmiller writes about the processes and practices developed by poetryXchange in her book, The Poets of El Sol, published by UC Press in 2011.
