ELECTIVES

Music (6th, 7th, 8th)
An “El Sol Rockers” member of the group will gain performance experience on an instrument of their choice (piano, drums/percussion, acoustic or electric guitar, bass, and/or vocals). Throughout the year, the students will gain valuable musical theory knowledge (reading music) as well as the correct technique in learning to play an instrument.

Members of the group will also have several performance opportunities that consist of performing for their peers at school assemblies, off-campus performances, as well as an exciting opportunity to be a member of the “pit band” for our Broadway musicals that happen each year for our elementary students.

Musical Theatre Techniques (6th, 7th, 8th)
Musical Theatre Techniques is a course designed to teach students the fundamentals of theatrical performance. Students will learn audition techniques, entertainment industry standards, and performance tactics necessary for a career in the theatre. Students will build their audition book, learn fundamental Broadway dance routines, explore the history of the American musical, and perform scenes from all realms of theatre. The course will culminate in a showcase where students will present the skills they have acquired in dance, acting, and vocal performance in front of an audience.

MESA (6th, 7th, 8th)
MESA (Mathematics Engineering Science Achievement) is an exciting class that aims to ignite your interest in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) by connecting classroom concepts with real-world applications. Our goal is to inspire you on your STEM journey, leading you toward higher education and future success. Throughout the school year, you will have the opportunity to work on engaging MESA and Closing Ceremony projects, which you will proudly take to UCI for competition. There will be two mandatory Saturday competitions held at UCI where you will showcase your projects and compete against other middle school students. Join MESA to explore the wonders of STEM and unleash your potential!

Ambassador (8th Grade ONLY)
Our goal is to develop leaders who promote and advance a positive school environment by hosting activities, enhancing school spirit, and contributing to the greater community through service. This class is designed to help students develop the skills and qualities of effective leadership. Students will learn about the various types of leadership, the qualities of an effective leader, and how to develop their leadership style, becoming better equipped to lead in their school.

Objectives:

  • Communication: Leaders need to be able to communicate effectively with others. This includes listening to others, sharing ideas, and giving clear instructions.
  • Problem-solving: Leaders must be able to effectively solve problems. This process includes identifying the problem, brainstorming potential solutions, and selecting the most effective one.
  • Decision-making: Leaders must be able to make informed decisions. This includes weighing the pros and cons of different options and making a decision that is in the group’s best interest.
  • Teamwork: Leaders must be able to work effectively with others. This includes delegating tasks, resolving conflicts, and building consensus.
  • Motivation: Leaders need to be able to motivate others. This includes setting a positive example, inspiring others, and encouraging others to achieve their goals.

ART (6th, 7th, 8th)*
Students who choose the art elective will be placed in one of the 3 art specialty classes upon evaluation by the art team.

Students will explore the creative process from start to finish through a variety of media and techniques, growing their skills and knowledge in the visual arts. From dreaming and creating to art history and culturally significant artworks from around the world, students will explore all facets of the visual arts. Media addressed this year will include digital art, illustration, printmaking, sculpture, and other forms of art. Students will work with their art teacher to determine the best class placement (Art Exploration, Art of Design, or Art of Portfolio) during the first week of school.
